Movie Review: Molt
| |
Mychal Thompson's Kevin is a journalist caught up in an internet conspiracy in writer/director Ari Briskman's indie drama Molt, a 75-minute release from Multicom Entertainment Group that had a short run on the indie fest circuit prior to its current release.
The conspiracy in which Kevin is caught up centers around a sinister, unseen entity that he becomes increasingly convinced is real. As his investigation deepens, Kevin's grip on reality loosens and he begins to downward spiral into paranoia. Turning to a fringe parapsychologist who fuels his ever-increasing obsession, it doesn't take long for Kevin to wonder if he's closing in or if this sinister entity has already found him.
Anyone who knows my long history of film criticism knows that I love discovering films like Molt, even on those occasions when I can't quite convince myself they've completely lured me in. Molt is compelling storytelling, a uniquely told story brought to life by an intriguing turn from Mychal Thompson and the rest of this small but talented ensemble cast. For Briskman, this is an ambitious film that's worth checking out just for the thrill of seeing an up-and-coming filmmaker.
If you watch Molt, watch the film in its entirety as it's one of those films that connects. While you may or may not fall in love with the film, you'll appreciate it an awful lot more by playing a game of cinematic connect-the-dots. Labeled as a tapestry of drama, horror, and thriller, Molt slow-burns until it amps up and the psychological components are definitely mighty strong here.
